The Legend of Kava Tonga

The legend of kava Tonga is one of the most known stories in Tonga. My aunty told me the story once and it was pretty sad to hear about. So there lived a couple that were Tongan and only had one kid which was their daughter ' Kava '! They didn't have much at the island because they were the only ones that lived there and besides, the island wasn't able to grow things live fruits or anything eatable. One day the king and his men's came to the island where the couple and their daughter lived to rest and find food. The king ordered his men's to go and find some food for them to eat well the king stayed and rest. One particular man went deep into the green and dark mini jungle and some how bummed into the couple. The man asked the couple if they had any food anywhere to take to the king to eat. The man and his wife agreed to find some food although they knew they didn't have any thing that was eatable in the island. So the kings man left in search for a place to rest before going ahead and finding some food. The couple went some where to think about what they were going to do because they had no meat in the island for the king to eat. My aunty told me that the couple had to kill their only daughter so then the king would be able to eat some meat. The daughter was very sick and so the couple already knew that she would die. They decided to Barry her because the king refused to and he said to not do anything and just leave her to rest. The king thanked them for the tough decision they had to make and for the sacrifice. The king and his men's together with the couple gathered around the place they berried her. A few days later the couple's returned to where their daughter was berried and found two things growing on top which was kava and sugar cane. They saw a little mouse eat the kava and for some reason the mouse was walking as if it was drowsy. The mouse then ate the sugar cane and then got better as he walked away. But this was a pretty rough going Story but it's a great way to learn the story behind kava and what's important about it in the Tongan way.
