How is the oceans environment doing ??????

  1. Malo Deborah! Thank you for raising the question about the condition of our oceans and asking for points of view about plastics. I am a researcher at The University of Auckland and I am very concerned about the plastic problem. I agree, not only does plastic negatively impact marine life like fish and sea mammals, but as you point out, it also could be making us sick because sea food is a huge part of the human diet. I do believe we need to move towards a ban on plastics. There are already other products manufacturers could be using and this would push the innovation we need to fix this mess. Have you seen how they are now making plastic out of seaweed products which are edible and do no harm to wild life? I think this is an exciting innovation. I also think over time we have moved to more plastic to protect trees and reduce the use of glass, but plastic is even less environmentally friendly. Let me know what you think of the seeweed plastics idea - you can find information here: https://www.wowshack.com/indonesian-start-makes-edible-cups-seaweed/

  2. Thank for the lovely and helpful comment Naomi, I actually was thinking of this at home during after school and decided to write something that could help people realize what is happening to our earth and its environment. I now know that at least someone gets me and what should we be improving for the future to come. And I agree on banding plastic, even doe it is all helpful and that it is also getting us into a lot of danger. Feel free to comment for any thing that you really want me to make so I can post.

    1. That's amazing that you were reflecting on this very serious issue after school and that you felt compelled to get your message out to others! Are you learning about environmental issues in school at the moment? You asked me to suggest content that I thought you could post and I suppose it would be all about innovation - getting the message out about all the exciting ways science is developing new materials that could be used instead of plastic. Do you think you could make a DLO that explains these very new innovations and how/why they would make such a difference? I think getting these creative, cutting-edge ideas out there will spark people's imagination about how things could be done differently. I can contribute links to some information I have that could add to yours and you could synthesize the information into the DLO? Let me know what you think?
